Love…

Sometimes it makes sense and sometimes it doesn’t.  Sometimes it could last forever and sometimes it could end when a person least expects it.  This emotion, this ecstasy, or in some cases, a knife in the back, can never really have a solid definition.  Or an introduction for that matter.  Which brings me to a story, about two young men and a woman.  A story that told itself once before, but never again will it be told.  For it’s too much to bare.

These two young men were best of friends ever since kindergarten.  They had their share of arguments and always found ways to resolve them.  Jake was the older of the two and he usually got all the girls.  But it didn’t bother him.  He always had Jakes back and always would.  Then entered Nicole.  You could say she was perfect, in his eyes.  Dark brown hair just barely tapping her shoulders, and these starlit eyes, that could drive a person insane.  You could dig so deep in those eyes, and never find a bottom.  “Almost like a dream,” he thought.

These individuals all met up one day, and from that moment on, things changed.  Instead of a Jake and a Nicole.  It was Jake and Nicole, and he couldn’t ask for anything worse.  In the past, things like this didn’t bother him.  But this time was different.  For the first time in his life, he was in love.  He felt that if he hung in there, that he would someday get a chance to breathe in this wonderful feeling.  Instead of hitting a brick wall.  But he gritted his teeth and punched another hole in the wall, and moved on.  A typical day in the life of this hopeless dreamer.

A few months have passed, and Jake and Nicole were getting along great.  But in the past few days, he sensed a certain change in the air.  He couldn’t quite put his finger on it, until her heard a sound he’d never hoped to hear.  The sound of Nicole crying.  He looked around and noticed there was no Jake as there was before.  Ironically, he smiled and thought he would take this opportunity.  He walked over to Nicole, with a huge breath before that final step, and softly asked, “What’s wrong?  Why are you crying?”

A few tears have passed, and she finally lifted her head and shot him with those eyes, and replied with a whimper, “I don’t know…what’s going on.  I feel…I feel like I’m going to lose it and I‘m scared!”

“Is it Jake?” I asked.

“I don’t know…I tried calling him when I began crying but I couldn’t get a hold of him…and he’s never done that before.  I don’t know if he’s mad at me or something’s wrong that he’s not telling me about.  I just don’t know what to do…”

He put his head down and closed his eyes, trying to think of what he could say.  This poor young man lost in his own thoughts, trying to find the right words.  But never finding them.  So, he said the only thing he could say.  “I can stay and talk if you need me to.  Anytime, and anywhere.”

Time began to pass, some days quick and some days slow.  Jake grew more and more oblivious to Nicole’s needs.  Making his job sweeter by the day.  He wanted to help her.  He felt she needed someone and he felt that he could be that someone.

One day, unwillingly, he asked Jake for a few minutes to talk.  “Hey Jake, can I ask you something?”

“What’s that buddy?  Something wrong?”

“Well, yes.  It seems you’ve been ignoring Nicole lately and I’m wondering if theirs something going on that I should know about?”

Jake put his head down for a moment, and smiled.  He could tell that something was up, but he wasn’t sure if he should ask any further.  Then, Jake lifted his head with a smirk and said, “Theirs nothing wrong bro.  Nothing serious anyways.  Come on, lets get out of here!”
He obviously smelt dishonesty in the air.  But regardless, he agreed and jumped in the passenger seat.  Hoping his thoughts were nothing more then thoughts.

As fast as it became day, nighttime began to set in.  They were just coming back from a night on the town.  Hoping to forget that conversation never occurred.  They were in the middle of talking when a stop sign was coming up.  Jake, oblivious to the stop sign, went right past it without even a tap on the brakes.  The next thing that happens, isn’t pretty at all.

Him and Jake were sideswiped by a drunk driver, right off the road.  When he began to gain consciousness,  he saw Jake, across the blood spilt asphalt, dead.  A moment later, past the police car lights flashing, someone was running towards them.  It took him a few moments to put it in focus, and when he did, he closed his eyes and smiled.  It was Nicole, with a tear dropping every two steps.  Without hesitation, he opened his eyes, only to witness that a nightmare has come true.  There she was, embracing Jake, the man that never cared, holding his head against her aching heart, still believing he was the only one that could soothe it.  He closed his eyes, and with his final breath, smiled, with just one tear staining the forsaking ground.

Police and investigators assumed, because of an unfortunate car crash, that two men and a drunk driver were killed.  But in truth, only 2 people died that night due to a car crash.  The one that God felt he didn’t deserve a name, nor did he deserve a chance, died because of her.  He died because of something he could never have.

The End
Dedicated to one of the greatest men to walk this earth, and may he keep on walkin'.

Thats you Shab ;)
